Buona Pasqua a Tutti!
Happy Easter to you all! Easter and Spring are both arriving at the same time for 2016. What a wonderful time to be in Venice, the temperature is much easier, Carnivale is over and we can get on with the year.
Basilica San Marco
Good Friday and Easter Saturday (25/26 March) are normal working days in Italy but on Easter Sunday and Monday most shops and markets are closed. Thankfully many restaurants are open and you will have the opportunity to taste traditional Easter fare, often lamb and artichokes followed by the delicious, rich, dove shaped Colomba Pasquale bread.
Many of the museums and of course all the churches are open. Easter Sunday is a great day to attend Mass at any of the churches, especially St Mark's Basilica where Mass is celebrated at 7:00am, 8:00am, 9:00am, 10:30am (High Mass), midday, and 6:45pm. You are not allowed to tour the church during Mass as is the case in all churches.
Concerts are performed all over Venice in the evenings during Easter - and most of the year - with many performed in beautiful churches with the musicians dressed in Rennaissance costumes. Click here for more information and to make a booking. Puccini's Madama Butterfly is on at Teatro La Fenice on Easter Saturday evening.
Buona Pasqua!
If you have time and can tear yourself away from Venice for a day, the primavera del Prosecco which runs until 12 June, celebrates the wines and foods found among the hills of Treviso in small medieval villages and ancient castles.
